What are public benefits?

Public benefits are government-provided resources to citizens who meet certain criteria. In Virginia, public benefits refer to financial aid and other resources available from state and federal agencies to citizens with disabilities. This can include Social Security Income (SSI), Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Medicaid, Medicare, and similar programs. These types of benefits are governed by disability planning law in Virginia, which sets out the rules and regulations for who can access the benefits and how to do so. The Virginia Department of Social Services is the primary agency responsible for administering public benefits to citizens with disabilities, however, other state agencies may offer additional resources and services. These benefits are meant to serve as a safety net for individuals with disabilities to ensure they have the resources they need for basic needs such as food, housing, and medical care.
