What is the Social Security Blue Book?

The Social Security Blue Book is a compilation of the rules and regulations set by the Social Security Administration (SSA) that define disability in the state of Virginia. It outlines physical and mental impairments that are recognized by the SSA as qualifying a person to receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). The Blue Book is an extremely important resource for those living with disabilities in Virginia, as it outlines the criteria and standards that must be met in order to qualify for benefits. The Blue Book is divided into several sections, including the Listing of Impairments for adults and children, and the sections which discuss Medical Vocational Allowances that may be used to determine a person’s ability to work in spite of any impairments. Within the Listing of Impairments, each disability is broken down into categories and further defined in order to provide a clear picture of what must be documented in order for someone to qualify for disability benefits. For example, the criteria for qualifying as visually impaired includes a description of conditions and the level of severity of the impairment. The Social Security Blue Book provides a way for individuals to understand the specific requirements for disability planning in Virginia and to determine if they may qualify for the benefits they need to live a better life. It is an important tool for those seeking assistance and for those in charge of providing assistance.
