How long does it take to receive a disability determination decision?
In California, it typically takes around 90 days for a disability determination decision to be made. This time frame begins when the Social Security Administration’s Disability Determination Services (DDS) receives an initial application for disability benefits. Upon receiving the application, the DDS will conduct an in-depth review of your medical records, work history, and other documents provided in support of the claim. Following this review, the DDS will then render a decision. It is important to keep in mind that depending on the nature and complexity of your disability claim, the review process may take longer than 90 days. For example, if your case is complicated and requires additional investigation, a decision may be delayed. Additionally, if you submit any additional information after your initial application, the review process may be extended. If you are dissatisfied with the decision that you receive from the DDS, you are entitled to file a request for reconsideration within 60 days of the date of the original determination. Therefore, it is possible that the total process, from initial application to reconsideration decision, may take over six months to complete. It is recommended that if you are filing a disability claim in California, you consult an experienced disability lawyer who can provide advice on best practices and timelines concerning your case.
