How often do I have to re-apply for disability benefits?
In Washington, the frequency with which you need to reapply for disability benefits depends on the type of benefit you receive. For Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you may be required to periodically fill out paperwork to continue receiving benefits. The Social Security Administration recommends that you reapply for your benefits one year before the expiration date of your previous application. For Medicare coverage, you will need to reapply for disability benefits once every three years. The good news is that Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) can both be used to pay for Medicare coverage, so you don’t have to reapply for Medicare if you already receive Social Security benefits. Finally, the Washington Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) offers additional disability programs and services that you may need to reapply for. This includes the Disability Lifeline program, which provides limited financial assistance to people with disabilities who need help paying for basic living expenses. To be eligible for the program, you must re-apply for benefits annually. In general, it is important to keep track of when your disability benefits are set to expire and to reapply for them in a timely manner. This will ensure that you do not lose your disability benefits or have to go through the time-consuming process of reapplying for them.
