What is a functional capacity evaluation (FCE)?

Functional capacity evaluations (FCEs) are assessments conducted by trained professionals that measure an individual’s ability to perform specific tasks, such as sitting, standing, lifting, carrying, and walking. These assessments are typically used to determine a person’s ability to do a job or participate in a particular activity, and they are especially relevant when it comes to disability planning law in Rhode Island. In the context of disability planning law, FCEs can be used to determine eligibility for disability benefits and/or services. FCEs are conducted in a controlled setting and typically involve a series of tests that measure the individual’s capacity to perform specific tasks. The tests may include physical tests such as lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling, as well as mental tests such as problem solving and memory retention. The purpose of these tests is to determine the individual’s physical and mental abilities in comparison to the abilities of a person without a disability. FCEs can also be used to assess a person’s ability to perform a task or activity in the workplace. This assessment can be used to identify potential safety risks or hazards that may be present in order to protect the individual’s health and safety. Additionally, FCEs can help employers to determine an employee’s ability to perform job-related tasks, and can be used to determine which job duties an employee can and cannot perform. In sum, functional capacity evaluations are assessments that determine an individual’s capacity to perform physical and mental tasks in accordance with disability planning law in Rhode Island. These evaluations can be used to determine eligibility for benefits and services, as well as to identify safety risks in the workplace.
