What type of license suspensions can I expect after a DUI conviction?
If you are convicted of DUI in Pennsylvania, you can expect a suspension of your driver’s license. In general, the length of the suspension will depend on the severity of the offense and any prior convictions. For a first-time DUI conviction, you will lose your license for a period of one year. If a minor was in the car at the time of the offense, or if your BAC was over .10%, the license suspension can be extended to 18 months. If you have had prior DUI convictions, the penalties are even more severe. For a second offense within 10 years, you will lose your license for one year, with a possible extension of up to 18 months for a BAC of more than .10%. For a third offense, the license suspension will be for a period of two years, with an extension of up to three years for a BAC of more than .10%. If you are convicted of a fourth DUI offense, you will permanently lose your license, with the only option to appeal for reinstatement after five years. If the fourth offense also involved a minor or an incident of extreme recklessness, you may not be eligible to apply for reinstatement for up to 10 years. No matter how many DUI convictions you have, you will also be required to complete at least a court-mandated alcohol-awareness program, and additional safety programs may be required depending on the circumstances of the offense.
