What type of license suspensions can I expect after a DUI conviction?
In Washington, a DUI conviction can lead to several different types of license suspensions depending on the circumstances. If you are convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol, you can expect to receive an administrative license suspension from the Washington Department of Licensing (DOL). This suspension can last for 90 days for a first offense. If you are convicted of a second DUI within 7 years of the first offense, the suspension can last for 2 years. In addition to the administrative license suspension from the DOL, a DUI conviction may also result in a criminal conviction which can result in a longer suspension. According to the Washington State Patrol, a first DUI offense can result in a license suspension of up to one year, while a second offense can result in two years. A third offense can result in the license being totally revoked. Additionally, if a person is sentenced to jail time for a DUI, the court will often impose a period of license suspension upon release from jail. This period can last for up to one year for a first offense, and up to five years for a second offense. Drivers should also keep in mind that a DUI conviction can also lead to an ignition interlock device (IID) being installed. If an IID is installed, you will not be able to drive until the device has been removed.
