What type of license suspension is required for a conviction of a DUI?

In Washington, if a person is convicted of a DUI (driving under the influence), they will experience a mandatory license suspension. The length of the suspension will depend on the circumstances of the case. If the DUI is the first offense and is non-aggravated (meaning, there weren’t any additional violations such as speeding or reckless driving), the license suspension can range from 90 days to one year. A second DUI offense, within seven years of the first, will result in a mandatory two-year license suspension. A third offense, within seven years of the first, will result in a mandatory three-year license suspension. If the DUI was aggravated with other violations or if it is a fourth offense within seven years of the first, the license suspension will be indefinite. In these cases, the convicted motorist will be required to apply for reinstatement of their license, and that may involve such things as an evaluation for alcohol and drug addiction, completion of a mandatory Driver Improvement Program, and a DMV hearing. If a person receives a license suspension due to a DUI, they are not allowed to drive at all during that period. If they are caught driving, they will face additional charges, which could include a longer license suspension, heavy fines, and even jail time.
