What is the difference between a drug DUI and an alcohol DUI?
In California, a DUI refers to driving under the influence of either drugs or alcohol. The difference between a drug DUI and an alcohol DUI is in the substances that a driver has consumed prior to driving. In an alcohol DUI, the driver has consumed alcohol prior to driving. Alcohol intoxication can impair a driver’s coordination and motor skills, leading to an increased risk of accidents. In California, the legal limit for alcohol in the blood is .08%. If a driver’s BAC (blood alcohol content) is higher than the legal limit, they can be arrested for a DUI. In a drug DUI, the driver has consumed drugs before driving. This includes both illegal drugs and prescription drugs, such as painkillers. Some of these drugs can impair driving skills, even in relatively small doses. California also has a “zero tolerance” policy that prohibits drivers from having any trace of certain drugs in their system while driving. If a driver is found with any amount of these drugs in their system, they can be arrested for a DUI. Overall, the main difference between a drug DUI and an alcohol DUI is the substance that was consumed prior to driving. It’s important to remember that in either case, both can result in serious penalties if you are caught driving while impaired.
