What are the consequences of a 1st DUI in the state of Tennessee?

In the state of Tennessee, consequences for a first-time DUI (driving under the influence) conviction can be severe. Depending on the circumstances of the conviction, a driver’s license suspension of 1 or 2 years may be imposed. There is also a monetary fine of up to $1,500 and up to 11 months and 29 days of jail time. The court may also impose a mandatory minimum jail sentence of 48 hours, and an additional 48 hours of community service. Additional penalties may include mandatory alcohol and drug treatment classes, ignition interlock devices, and vehicle registration suspension. In addition to any criminal penalties imposed by the court, the Tennessee Department of Safety will revoke the offender’s license for at least a year. The driver may petition for a restricted license, which would allow for limited driving privileges, but this privilege is only granted in certain circumstances. First and foremost, if the driver has a “clean” driving record since the DUI or if he/she has met all the conditions of their sentence, the license can be reinstated. The shame of a DUI conviction can also have serious long-term consequences. The conviction will remain on the driver’s record, and can make it difficult to find employment or to qualify for certain types of insurance.
