What are the potential consequences of a DWI conviction?
In Nebraska, the potential consequences of a Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) conviction can be severe. A first time offense could result in a fine of up to $500 and up to six months of jail time. Additionally, a mandatory license suspension of up to 30 days could be imposed as well as mandatory court-ordered substance abuse treatment. A second offense could lead to a fine of up to $1,000 and a mandatory minimum jail time of two to seven days. Additionally, the mandatory license suspension period is extended to 90 days, and the offender can also face up to six months in jail. Third and subsequent DWI convictions in Nebraska mean that the accused must face a mandatory jail sentence of 30 days to one year. Furthermore, the mandatory license suspension for the accused is extended to a 1-year period and additional fines of up to $10,000 can be imposed. In addition to the legal penalties, a DWI conviction can negatively affect the offender’s educational, employment, and other personal opportunities. Many employers and educational institutions consider criminal convictions, including DWI convictions, when considering an applicant’s eligibility.
