What are the different types of employee benefits under the law?
Under Washington law, there are several types of employee benefits that workers are entitled to. For instance, an employee may be eligible for vacation days, holidays, jury duty leave, sick leave, family medical leave, and bereavement leave. Vacation days are typically paid days off that allow an employee to enjoy leisure time away from work. Holidays are days in which an employee is given the day off with pay to observe a particular holiday. Jury duty leave is provided to an employee so he or she can fulfill a jury service obligation without being penalized for missing work. Sick leave is given to an employee who cannot show up to work due to an illness or injury, and often allows the employee to be paid for a portion of the missed days off. The Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) provides employees with up to 12 weeks of unpaid job protection, so they can take care of a sick family member or attend to the birth or adoption of a child without worry of losing their job. Lastly, bereavement leave allows an employee to take time off to attend the funeral of a close family member. In addition to leave benefits, Washington law also requires employers to provide workers’ compensation benefits. Employees who are injured on the job or contract an occupational illness will be provided with compensation to cover medical costs, lost wages, and other related expenses. Another form of employee benefit that is mandated under Washington law is the minimum wage. All employers in Washington must pay their employees at least the current minimum wage established by the state. Employees may also be provided with additional benefits such as health insurance, life insurance, retirement plans, and commuter assistance.
