Who is protected by employment discrimination law?

Employment discrimination law in North Carolina prohibits employers from discriminating against employees or job applicants in certain protected categories. These categories include race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age, disability, genetic information, and military service. This law applies to employers who have 15 or more employees, with the exception of employers covered by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which applies regardless of the number of employees. Employment discrimination law in North Carolina also includes protections for whistleblowers, people who are discriminated against for filing a complaint or refusing to comply with illegal company practices. Any employee who believes they are a victim of discrimination, harassment, or retaliation based on any of the protected categories can file a complaint with the North Carolina Human Relations Commission. It is illegal for employers to retaliate against an employee for filing a complaint or participating in an investigation.
