What is the difference between educational equity and equality?

Educational equity and equality are two important concepts in educational law in Washington. These concepts have similarities because both aim to increase opportunities for all students to access quality education. However, there are distinct differences between equity and equality. Educational equality is providing each student with the same resources. This means providing all students with the same educational opportunities regardless of their background. It implies that everyone should have the same access to education and resources regardless of their race, gender, family income, etc. Educational equity, on the other hand, involves providing each student with what they need. This means that the resources provided to each student should be adjusted to their needs and abilities. For example, schools may provide additional resources to students with disabilities, low-income students, or those who are part of minority groups in order to ensure that all students are provided with the opportunity to succeed. In summary, while both equity and equality ultimately work to ensure that students receive a quality education, they differ in how they go about achieving this goal. While equality aims to ensure that each student has the same access to resources, equity works to ensure that different resources are provided to each student based on their individual needs and abilities.
