What is the difference between special education and regular education?
The main difference between special education and regular education is the amount of emphasis placed on the individual. Special education is designed to provide extra attention to a student’s unique learning needs. Special education services are tailored to meet the specific strengths and challenges of each student. This might include additional support such as specialized instruction, therapeutic services, assistive technology, and modifications to instruction. The goal of regular education is to teach all students the same content at the same pace with the same curriculum. It is centered on a teacher teaching a group of students together. Regular education usually involves a variety of teaching methods within the classroom to support the learning of students in the general education setting. Under Oklahoma law, special education is defined as programs and services designed to meet the educational needs of students with IEPs who have disabilities. It is the responsibility of a school district’s special education personnel to provide those services. Regular education is defined as programs and services provided to students without IEPs. Its purpose is to meet the educational needs of all students in the district. Both special education and regular education are important in Oklahoma. Special education ensures that all students with disabilities have access to an appropriate education, while regular education provides all students with a comprehensive educational experience.
