What is education reform?
Education reform is a process of changing a school system to better serve students. In Texas, reform typically involves making changes to the structure, funding, and policies of the public education system. These changes are often intended to improve student performance, reduce dropout rates, and improve graduate outcomes. Reforms can involve alterations to curriculum, teaching methods, educational materials, and assessment systems. School districts may also introduce new teaching practices, such as incorporating technology into the classroom, providing specialized instruction for students with different learning styles or abilities, and emphasizing project-based and experiential learning. In addition, reforms may also focus on changing the way resources are allocated to classrooms and schools. For example, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) has adopted strategies to reduce funding disparities between traditional school districts and charter schools, as well as to better serve economically disadvantaged students. Finally, legislation and policy changes often accompany reforms. These can range from changes in school governance and accountability, to streamlining administrative processes, to providing additional resources and support services to schools. In 2019, the Texas legislature passed the Texas Education Reform Act, which includes reforms designed to boost student outcomes, reduce classroom size, and support underserved student populations.
