What is Title VII of the Civil Rights Act?
Title VII of the Civil Rights Act is a federal law that was passed in 1964 to protect people from discrimination in employment and education. In Texas, it prohibits employers, educational institutions, and labor unions from discriminating on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, or disability. It applies to all aspects of employment, from hiring and firing, to promotions, job assignments, wages, and benefits. It also prohibits employers from retaliating against employees who file charges of discrimination, and from retaliating against employees who help enforce the law. Title VII also requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations for employees with disabilities, and to provide equal access to employment opportunities regardless of sex or race. Title VII is enforced by the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). It is important to note that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act does not apply to all employers. For example, employers with fewer than 15 employees are generally exempt, as are religious organizations. Additionally, employers are not required to provide equal access to employment opportunities if they can show that such a requirement would impose an undue hardship on their business.
