What are the rules regarding campaign finance disclosures?

In Virginia, campaign finance disclosures are regulated by the State Board of Elections. All political committees are required to register with the Board and file campaign finance disclosures. These reports must detail all contributions and expenditures of the committee, including where the money was spent and who it was given to. The reports must be filed before the election, with additional reports due every 30 days leading up to the election. Individuals making contributions of more than $100 must also provide information on the source of the money. This can include their name and address, the name and address of their employer, and the amount and date of the contribution. In addition, anonymous contributions of more than $50 must also be reported. This includes contributions made through charities, corporations, or other third-party organizations. Campaigns and political committees are also prohibited from accepting certain out-of-state contributions over certain limits. This is to prevent large out-of-state donations from skewing the political process. There are also restrictions on the use of campaign funds. Campaigns and their related committees are prohibited from using funds for personal use, or for any activities prohibited by law. Any money collected for a political campaign must be used only for activities related to the campaign. All of these regulations are designed to create transparency in the political process and ensure that elections in Virginia are fair and honest. By making these rules clear, Virginia voters can have more confidence in the candidates they are voting for.
