What are the rules regarding early voting?
In North Dakota, the rules regarding early voting vary depending on the type of election. For general elections, any registered voter may cast their ballot for federal, state, and/or local offices via absentee ballot up to 40 days prior to the election. In addition, local election boards may empower the county of residence to open up early voting centers during the weeks leading up to the election. These early voting centers must be open on the 40th day before the election and must remain open during regular business hours until the Tuesday preceding the election. The early voting centers must also be equally accessible to all voters regardless of party affiliation. For primary elections, registered voters may vote via absentee ballot up to 28 days before the election. Early voting locations may be available as determined by the county election board. However, only party-specific ballots may be issued at the early voting locations. Military personnel and civilians living overseas are also eligible to cast their ballots via absentee ballot for federal, state, and/or local offices. When a military voter is registered in a North Dakota county, they may request an absentee ballot at any point prior to Election Day. If a voter is not registered in a North Dakota county, they may register and vote via absentee ballot up until the Tuesday before the election.
