How does environmental law protect endangered species?

Environmental law plays an important role in the protection of endangered species in Washington. As the state’s population grows and environmental resources become increasingly scarce, the federal and state governments must take a proactive role in conserving and protecting its natural resources. This includes the preservation of endangered species. At the federal level, the Endangered Species Act of 1973 (ESA) establishes a set of regulations designed to protect and recover species that are in peril of extinction. The ESA provides regulations for the listing, recovery, and management of endangered species in Washington. It also prohibits the unauthorized taking of endangered species, including their habitat. At the state level, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) has established regulations to protect and enhance the habitat of the state’s endangered species. These include regulations that require landowners to leave a portion of their land as buffer zones in order to provide a buffer to threatened and endangered species. Furthermore, WDFW has also created a Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) program, which identifies species in need of conservation and outlines conservation strategies. Ultimately, environmental law plays a crucial role in the protection of endangered species in Washington. Federal and state regulations ensure that endangered species are given the protection and resources necessary to survive and, hopefully, to eventually thrive.
