How do I file an environmental law complaint?
In Virginia, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) handles complaints about environmental law violations. To file a complaint, you must provide the location and nature of the alleged violation. You may file a complaint online, by mail, by fax, or by telephone. To file a complaint online, visit the DEQ website and scroll down to “File a Complaint.” You’ll be asked to provide your name, address, phone number, and email address, as well as the location and nature of the alleged violation. When you’re ready to submit, click “Submit.” If you choose to file a complaint by mail, fax, or phone, you must provide the same information as listed above. Mail complaints should be sent to: Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, P.O. Box 1105, Richmond, VA 23218. Phone complaints can be made to (804) 698-4000. For fax complaints, use (804) 698-4098. Once your complaint is received, the Environmental Law and Compliance Division of the DEQ will review the information and investigate if necessary. You may receive a response or further instructions from the DEQ.
