What is the Pollution Prevention Act?

The Pollution Prevention Act (PPA) is a law in Virginia that was passed in 1992 aimed at preventing and controlling environmental pollution in the state. It requires industrial and commercial facilities to take steps to reduce or eliminate pollutants and hazardous materials that are released into the environment. The goal is to reduce the amount of pollution that may be affecting air, water, or land resources. Under the PPA, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has the authority to regulate air, water, and land pollution, as well as hazardous material releases. The DEQ will inspect facilities and require corrective actions when pollution prevention efforts are not adequate. The law also requires certain facilities to develop and implement a Pollution Prevention Plan that will help to reduce or eliminate pollution. In addition to pollution prevention, the PPA also requires the DEQ to develop a plan to reduce or eliminate hazardous waste through waste minimization, recycling, reuse, and other pollution-prevention measures. It also requires the DEQ to set water quality standards and create an implementation plan to ensure compliance with the standards. The PPA is a powerful tool for environmental protection in Virginia. By establishing standards and requiring pollution prevention plans, the law helps to protect the environment and ensure that it remains healthy and productive for future generations.
