What is the Clean Air Act?

The Clean Air Act is a United States federal law which is aimed at protecting human health and the environment from air pollution. The Clean Air Act was first passed in 1963 and has since been amended several times. It is the primary federal law in the U.S. for controlling air pollution. In California, the Clean Air Act is enforced by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). CARB is responsible for setting emission regulations for cars, trucks and other vehicles. It also sets limits on ozone, smog and other pollutants from factories, power plants and other sources. CARB also works to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and oversees the implementation of state and federal clean air regulations. The Clean Air Act seeks to reduce air pollution by setting emission standards. These standards set limits on the amount of certain pollutants which can be released by factories, power plants and vehicles. Companies that exceed these limits face fines. Additionally, the Act requires companies to adopt clean technologies and methods to reduce their emissions. The Clean Air Act has been successful in reducing air pollution and improving air quality in California and across the U.S. In California, air quality has improved significantly since the Act was first implemented and the state is now meeting the national air quality standards. As a result, public health benefits are evident and California’s air is safe to breathe.
