What is the Clean Power Plan?

The Clean Power Plan (CPP) is a Washington-based plan created to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide from coal- and gas-fired power plants. This plan was introduced by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to limit the amount of emissions that can be released from these plants. The goal of the CPP is to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases that are released into the atmosphere and to promote the production of more renewable energy. The Clean Power Plan imposes carbon dioxide emission limits on both existing and new power plants. These limits are based on advanced technologies or renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, and natural gas. The plan also encourages states to use energy efficiency measures to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The Clean Power Plan is part of the larger effort to reduce climate change, which is becoming an increasing risk to human health, ecosystems, and the economy. Washington state has adopted the goal of reducing emissions by at least 25 percent of 1990 levels by 2035. In order to meet this goal, the CPP requires states to implement plans that will reduce emissions from power plants. The Clean Power Plan is important to Washington because it sets a strong precedent for the state to reduce its emissions and make strides in mitigating the effects of climate change. It also provides an incentive for businesses and consumers to invest in renewable energy and energy efficiency measures, which can help the state meet its goals.
