What is the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act?

The Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) is a federal law enacted in 1947 to regulate the sale, distribution, and use of pesticides in the United States. The law is enforced by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). FIFRA gives the EPA the authority to register, or approve, all pesticides used in the US, establish restrictions on their use, and monitor their sale and application. FIFRA establishes the basic standards for pesticide use, including requiring labels to identify the product’s active ingredients, any restrictions on use, and appropriate protective clothing and equipment. It also requires that the product performs as intended, giving the EPA the authority to take legal action if it does not. FIFRA requires that all pesticides be applied in accordance with instructions on the label, by a licensed applicator if one is needed. In California, FIFRA is enforced by the California Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR). The DPR has additional regulations that are specific to the state. For example, they require the registration of all private pesticide applicators and the training of any person applying pesticides in a commercial setting. The FIFRA provides a foundation of regulation and oversight of the sale, distribution, and use of pesticides in California and throughout the United States. It is important in ensuring the safe and effective application of these products to protect the health of people, the environment, and the economy.
