What are the state environmental laws?

In Washington, state environmental laws protect natural resources from environmental harm or degradation. These laws are in place to ensure the safety of our water, land, and air. The Washington State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA) is one of the state’s most important environmental laws. This act requires state and local governments to consider the environmental impacts of proposed projects and activities. It also requires public disclosure and input to the decision-making process. The State Water Resources Act of 1971 is another law that protects Washington’s water resources. This act requires local governments to protect surface water, groundwater, tidal waters, and unclassified waters from pollution or contamination. It also regulates the draining or filling of wetlands and requires permission from the Department of Ecology for any activities near a body of water. Additionally, the Toxic Air Pollution Control Act (TAPCA) of 1975 regulate air pollutant emissions from stationary sources such as factories, power plants, and landfills. Under this act, a permit is required for any emissions above a certain threshold. Finally, the Washington Beach Bill of 2013 protects all of the state’s beaches, rivers, and lakes from pollution. This law requires local governments to set aside funds to maintain shorelines and keep them clean. It also prohibits activities such as the depositing of trash in public waters. All of these environmental laws are in place to ensure that Washington’s natural resources are protected from harm and contamination. They also provide opportunities for public input and consultation, ensuring that environmental protection is a priority in decision-making.
