How much notice do I have to give my employer before taking FMLA leave?
In order to take FMLA leave in the state of Washington, you must provide your employer with at least 30 days of advance notice. However, if you are unable to give the employer 30 days of notice due to an emergency or unforeseen circumstance, then you may be able to provide notice as soon as is practicable. In addition to giving your employer 30 days’ notice, you may need to provide them with a doctor’s note stating that you need to take FMLA leave for medical reasons. This note should be signed by a healthcare provider and include the expected duration of the leave. You must also provide your employer with a written statement regarding your reasons for taking FMLA leave. The statement should include a description of the medical condition and how it affects your ability to work. This statement should be provided within 15 calendar days of the start of your FMLA leave. It is important to keep in mind that your employer may require additional documentation in order to grant your request for FMLA leave.
