How often is a guardianship review required?
In Washington, guardianship reviews are required every three years. This is outlined in the Revised Code of Washington (RCW 11.88.090). This review consists of a court process where the guardianship is revisited and any changes must be approved by the court. During the review process, the guardian must provide a written report to the court detailing the current condition of the ward, the activities and services that have been provided, and any proposed changes to the guardianship. Other individuals may also provide their opinion during the review, such as a family member, medical professional, or social worker who may have knowledge of the ward’s current condition. The court will review this information and make a determination as to the appropriateness of the guardianship taking into account the wishes and best interests of the ward. If any changes are necessary to the guardianship, the court will order the guardian to make them. The guardianship review provides a crucial update to the court to ensure the ward’s needs are being properly addressed and that their wishes and best interests are being honored. It allows for any changes that need to be made and provides peace of mind that the ward is receiving the proper care and attention.
