What is an excluded service?
An excluded service is a type of health care or service that is not covered under a health insurance policy. In Washington, the health insurance law excludes services such as medical and surgical treatments, dental care, eyeglasses and contact lenses, and hearing aids. Additionally, the law also excludes services related to the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease or injury; obtains diagnostic or therapeutic services related to mental health or chemical dependency; and services related to medical and surgical treatment of eye conditions. These services are typically not covered under any health insurance policy and will have to be paid out of pocket. If an individual requires these services, they must purchase a supplemental policy.
