How do countries ensure that human rights are respected?

Human rights are fundamental rights that everyone is entitled to just by virtue of being human. In order to ensure that human rights are respected, countries create and implement laws and policies to protect people’s human rights. In California, the Bill of Rights protects basic civil rights and human rights, such as freedom of religion, speech, and press. Additionally, the California Constitution also has a Declaration of Rights which outlines basic human rights, such as the right to privacy and the right to due process of law. The United States is a signatory to many human rights documents, such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which includes protections for the right to life, freedom of expression, and the right to be free from torture, among other rights. The US government must also abide by its own laws, such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the Immigration and Nationality Act Amendments of 1965, and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. These laws help to protect the human rights of individuals no matter their race, ethnicity, gender, religion, or disability. Finally, there are also international laws and organizations, such as the International Criminal Court and Amnesty International, that work to ensure that people’s human rights are respected and protected. These organizations monitor and document human rights abuses and help to hold governments accountable. By implementing these measures and ensuring compliance, countries can make sure that people’s human rights are respected.
