What is the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities?
The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) is an international treaty that was adopted in 2008 by the United Nations. It has been adopted and ratified by the United States in 2009 and has become federal law in Washington State. The Convention is a comprehensive human rights instrument, which promotes and protects the rights of all persons with disabilities worldwide and is the first international human rights treaty of the 21st century. The CRPD calls for an end to discrimination and sets out a range of rights that people with disabilities should be able to enjoy. These rights include the right to equal recognition before the law, the right to access education, the right to independent living, the right to work, and the right to be free from exploitation, violence and abuse. The treaty also obligates states to take effective steps to ensure that people with disabilities have access to health care, rehabilitation and information services. The CRPD has been designed to ensure that people with disabilities are not left behind and can access all the same rights and freedoms that everyone else enjoys. It is an instrument of justice and the cornerstone of a global movement to ensure that people with disabilities are not treated unfairly, and that their needs are taken into account when it comes to both their daily lives and their futures.
