How are international treaties enforced?

International treaties are agreements between different countries, which can include protections for human rights. In Colorado, these treaties are enforced by US federal and state courts. At the federal level, federal courts have the authority to interpret the meaning of international treaties. When a new treaty is made, US federal courts will review it and make decisions about how it should be interpreted. These interpretations are legally binding, meaning that US citizens must obey the decisions made by the court. At the state level, Colorado courts can also enforce international treaties. The Colorado Supreme Court is the highest court in Colorado, and they have the power to decide how international treaties should be interpreted. If there is a conflict between what a Colorado court says and what an international court says, the Colorado court’s interpretation will usually be followed. When a country or individual violates the terms of an international treaty, there are a variety of potential punishments. The United Nations may be called upon to intervene in the situation and impose economic or diplomatic sanctions against the violator. In some cases, the United States and other countries may also impose economic and diplomatic sanctions. In extreme cases, authorized military force may be used to enforce the treaty.
