What is the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights?
The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) is an independent body of the Organization of American States (OAS) that works to promote and protect human rights in the Americas. It is an autonomous organ within the inter-American system for the promotion and protection of human rights, created in 1959 by the member states of the OAS and has its headquarters in Washington, DC. The IACHR is a permanent body that evaluates the human rights situation in the Americas; reviews the status of measures countries have taken to guarantee the rights of their citizens by means of the American Declaration of the Rights and Duties of Man and other instruments; receives and studies petitions concerning human rights violations in the region; and conducts investigations as necessary. In Texas, the IACHR is responsible for overseeing the enforcement of human rights law. This includes evaluating the status of national laws and regulations in the state and providing guidance to local authorities on how to comply with international human rights standards. Additionally, the IACHR is responsible for responding to reports of human rights violations in Texas, such as those related to freedom of expression, freedom of assembly, and the right to life and due process. It also has the power to take action, such as issuing a written opinion or a recommendation, as well as call attention to violations and recommend changes to government policies.
