What are the International Human Rights Standards?

International Human Rights Standards refer to a set of human rights protections that are universal in nature. The United Nations has developed a series of treaties and declarations that outline basic human rights, which have been adopted by most countries including the United States. The International Bill of Human Rights is the cornerstone of international human rights standards and includes the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR). The UDHR sets out a broad range of civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights. Article 1 of the UDHR states that “all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.” This larger framework is further outlined in more specific instruments including the ICCPR and ICESCR. These two treaties provide individuals with protections from certain human rights violations, including the right to life, liberty, and security of the person. The U.S. has ratified certain parts of the ICCPR and ICESCR, and as a result, Michigan has enacted laws to protect the rights outlined in these documents. For instance, Michigan has laws that protect the right to assembly, the freedom of expression, and the right to a fair trial. These laws are in place to ensure that all people living in Michigan are treated equally and with dignity and respect.
