What is an Uninsured Motorists Coverage (UMC)?

Uninsured Motorists Coverage (UMC) is an insurance policy that is offered to drivers in California. This coverage protects drivers who are in an accident with an uninsured or underinsured driver. It will also protect a driver if they are hit by a driver who does not have insurance. UMC can help drivers who are injured in accidents caused by drivers who are not insured or do not have enough insurance to cover the costs of their medical bills and other damages. Under California law, all insurers must offer UMC coverage to their insured drivers. This coverage is meant to protect drivers who may not have enough personal insurance coverage to cover their costs in the event of an accident. Depending on the policy, UMC can cover medical expenses, lost wages, and property damage. Drivers should note that UMC coverage is separate from bodily injury and property damage liability coverage. Bodily injury and property damage liability coverage will cover other drivers’ medical expenses or property damage that is caused by the policyholder. UMC, on the other hand, will only pay for the policyholder’s medical expenses and other damages. In addition, drivers should be aware that UMC coverage does not cover damage to their own vehicle or damage that is caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver that is not an accident. For example, an uninsured driver may cause a hit-and-run or a driver may not have enough insurance to cover the costs of an accident they cause. UMC will not cover these expenses. Overall, UMC coverage is an important part of car insurance in California and can help drivers in the event of an accident with an uninsured or underinsured driver.
