How do I renew or extend my asylum status?

In New York, like in other states, asylum seekers who are already in the United States but whose asylum status is about to expire must file an Application for Asylum and for Withholding of Removal. If you are seeking to extend your current asylum status, you must submit Form I-821D, Consideration of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), and evidence to support the application such as proof of identity and information about any other immigration relief you may be eligible for. You must also provide proof that you have been in the United States continuously for at least one year, and that you have not been convicted of a crime or been found to have committed fraud in any immigration-related matter. In order to renew your asylum status in New York, you must complete Form I-821D and provide evidence of your identity and other immigration relief you may be eligible for. This form requires you to provide detailed information about yourself, including your age, place of birth, country of origin, as well as information regarding any family members who are accompanying you in the United States. This form must also include a detailed description of the persecution or fear of persecution that caused you to seek asylum in the United States. Once you have completed the form and provided the required documents, you must submit the form and documents to United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). If your asylum status is approved, you will be issued an Employment Authorization Document (EAD), which will allow you to work legally in the United States for one year. After the one year period has expired, you can apply for a renewal of your EAD. If you still fear persecution in your home country, you can also apply for an asylum interview with an experienced immigration attorney to discuss your options.
