What is a “credible fear” interview?

A “credible fear” interview is a way for someone seeking asylum in California to demonstrate that they have a credible fear of persecution in their home country. During this interview, the individual has to show that they have reason to be afraid based on their political opinion, race, religion, nationality, or membership in a particular social group. The interviewer, usually an asylum officer, will ask the individual questions about why they fear they would be persecuted if they were to return to their home country. They must also present any documentation they have that may support their claims. If the individual is able to convince the officer that they have a credible fear of being persecuted, their case will be referred to an immigration judge, who will then decide whether they can be granted asylum. However, if the officer does not believe that the individual has a credible fear of being persecuted, their application will be denied. It is important for an individual seeking asylum in California to prepare for their “credible fear” interview and be prepared to make a convincing case. This means being able to adequately explain why they are afraid and provide any documents or evidence to back up their claims. If an individual is not able to demonstrate credible fear, they may be denied asylum and face deportation.
