What are the requirements for obtaining permanent residency?

In Virginia, permanent residency is typically obtained through one of two ways: Immigrant Investor programs or Employment-Based Immigration. The Immigrant Investor program is for entrepreneurs, investors, and business people who possess the financial resources and skills to invest in a U.S. business venture and create jobs. In order to be eligible for this program, investors must invest at least $1 million dollars in a business that is located in the United States or $500,000 in a Targeted Employment Area (TEA) – a rural or high-unemployment area. After investing in the business, the investor must create at least 10 full-time jobs for U.S. workers. The Employment-based Immigration path is for individuals who have the skills and experience necessary to fill a job in the U.S. In order to be eligible, most applicants must first obtain a Labor Certification and then a Petition for Alien Worker from the U.S. Department of Labor. This process ensures that applicants have the necessary skills to fill the job and that U.S. workers are not being displaced. Afterwards, the applicant must often obtain an immigrant visa from the U.S. Department of State. In both cases, permanent residency status may be granted to the applicant upon successful completion of all the requirements. Permanent residency status allows an individual to live, work, and travel to and from the United States without restriction. Additionally, permanent residents are eligible to apply for U.S. citizenship after living in the United States for five years.
