What is the process of applying for permanent residence for a child?

In Alaska, applying for permanent residence for a child generally follows the same process as applying for any other type of immigrant visa. The first step is to file a Petition for Alien Relative (Form I-130) for the child with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The petitioner must be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident and must provide evidence of the parent-child relationship. The next step is to file the Application for Permanent Residence (Form I-485) with USCIS. This application must be filed by the parent. When the petition and application are approved, the child will be issued a Green Card. If the child is outside the United States, the State Department will notify the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in the child’s home country. The child will then be required to attend an in-person interview and submit a medical exam, the cost of which must be borne by the parent. If approved, the child will receive an immigrant visa, which he or she can use to enter the United States. Once the child is in the United States, the parent must file an Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status (Form I-485) with USCIS. After the application is approved, the child will receive a Green Card.
