How can a child become a U.S. Citizen through a parent or guardian?

In Washington State, a child can become a U.S. Citizen through a parent or guardian through the process of naturalization. Naturalization is the legal process by which a non-citizen becomes a citizen of the United States. To become a citizen through a parent or guardian, the child must meet certain criteria. The child must: • Be under 18 years of age • Have at least one parent who is a U.S. citizen, either by birth or through naturalization • Be a lawful permanent resident of the United States • Have been physically present in the United States for at least five years before they turn 18 The parent or guardian must submit an application on behalf of the child with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The application is known as Form N-600, Application for Certificate of Citizenship. Form N-600 will require proof that the child meets the criteria for citizenship and that the parent is a U.S. citizen. Once the application is approved, the child will be issued a Certificate of Citizenship which is evidence that the child is a U.S. citizen. It is important to note that this process is only available to children under the age of 18. Adult children of U.S. citizens must complete the naturalization process on their own.
