What is a Voluntary Departure?

A Voluntary Departure, also known as a Voluntary Return, is a form of deportation in Washington in which an individual who is subject to deportation is given the option to leave the United States willingly instead of undergoing enforced removal. It is a way for the individual to agree to leave the U.S. without having to go through the lengthy and costly legal proceedings of deportation. If a person opts for voluntary departure, they must leave the United States within a set period of time and present themselves to the U.S. border or port of entry. Upon leaving the U.S., the individual is responsible for all their own travel costs. The U.S. government prefers voluntary departure over deportation proceedings due to the cost savings associated with it. If the individual chooses to voluntarily leave the U.S., they are not required to appear in court, and the government does not need to spend money on legal proceedings. Furthermore, the individual is able to leave on their own terms, rather than having to be escorted out of the country. Voluntary departures are seen as a more humane way of dealing with immigration issues, as it allows the individual to have control over the situation. While voluntary departure is seen as a more favorable option, it is important to remember that once an individual has left the U.S. under a voluntary departure, they are not allowed to return to the United States unless they are granted permission.
