What is a non-immigrant visa?
A non-immigrant visa is a document issued by the U.S. government that allows a foreign national to enter Washington for a limited period of time and to engage in activities not permitted by other categories of visa holders. This type of visa is typically issued to foreign nationals who wish to travel to Washington for business, pleasure, or medical treatment. Non-immigrant visas are also issued to certain students who wish to study in Washington. The most common types of non-immigrant visa include tourist visas, student visas, business visas, and cultural exchange visas. Each type of visa has its own requirements and conditions, and the individual must meet all of the criteria in order to be approved. Any foreign national admitted to Washington under a non-immigrant visa must abide by all of the conditions of the visa. Any violation of the terms of the visa can result in deportation. Additionally, it is illegal for individuals on a non-immigrant visa to work in Washington without proper authorization. Those found in violation of immigration law can be subject to criminal and civil penalties, as well as deportation. Non-immigrant visas are generally valid for a specific period of time, ranging from a few days to several years, depending on the type of visa issued. At the end of the visa period, foreign nationals must either depart the U.S. or apply for an extension of the visa or a change in visa status. Additionally, foreign nationals with a non-immigrant visa can apply for a green card to become a permanent resident of the United States.
