What is an immigrant visa?

An immigrant visa is a type of visa that allows a person to legally live and work in a foreign country of their choice. Immigrant visas are usually issued by the destination country’s embassy or consulate. In the United States, an immigrant visa is officially called a Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR) visa. When a person obtains an immigrant visa, they become a permanent resident of the country they are moving to, and they are allowed to stay there for as long as they like. As a permanent resident, they are eligible to obtain a driver’s license, purchase property, and apply for government benefits such as health insurance. In New York, an immigrant visa can be obtained through the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The USCIS website has detailed information on the different types of visas and the application process for obtaining a visa. When a person is granted an immigrant visa to the United States, they must abide by the country’s immigration laws and regulations. If they break the laws, they may be subject to deportation. In New York, a person who is found to have violated immigration laws may be removed from the United States and sent back to their home country.
