What is the R-1 visa?
The R-1 visa is a type of nonimmigrant visa available for individuals entering the United States for up to five years to take up a religious occupation. The R-1 visa is only available to individuals who are members of a religious denomination that has been in existence in the United States for at least two years and has a legitimate nonprofit organization in the U.S. To be eligible, the applicant for the R-1 visa must be coming to the U.S. to work for a recognized non-profit religious organization; and be either a minister or religious worker. In Florida, R-1 visa applicants must prove to the U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services that they are entering the U.S. to become employed in a religious occupation. USCIS also requires proof of the religious denomination in the U.S. that the applicant belongs to and proof that the employer intends to use the applicant’s services in the religious ministry. The employer must also provide proof of their status as a nonprofit religious organization. If the application is approved, the R-1 visa holder is allowed to stay in the United States for up to five years with the possibility of extending the visa. The R-1 visa is a great way for religious workers to come to the United States to perform religious work in Florida. It allows religious workers to stay in the United States while engaging in their religious employment. If the R-1 visa holder wishes to become a permanent resident, they must obtain a different visa, such as the EB-4 visa.
