What is a consular processing?

Consular processing is a way for immigrants who are living outside the United States to apply for permission to enter the country. It involves an individual sending an application to a U.S. embassy or consulate. The embassy or consulate then reviews the application and other documents such as birth certificates, passports, and other forms of identification. If the application is approved, the applicant is granted a visa which allows them to travel to the United States. In some cases, consular processing can be used to acquire employment-based U.S. visas. In Virginia, this means that an immigrant living outside the U.S. can apply for a job with a Virginia employer. The employer must then petition the U.S. government for employment-based immigration status for the immigrant. Once approved, the immigrant may then travel to the U.S. with the permission of the U.S. government to take the job they were offered. Overall, consular processing is an important tool for immigrants who wish to work in the United States. It allows employers and immigrants to utilize the legal process to ensure that both parties are complying with immigration law.
