What is the process for applying for a permanent residence card?
In Washington the process for applying for a permanent residence card is the same for all states. First, an individual must file an I-485 form, also cited as an application to register permanent residence or adjust status. This form can be found on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) website. Along with this form, the applicant must provide evidence of their identity, such as a birth certificate and passport, and proof of their legal status, such as a green card or visa. Once the I-485 form is submitted, the application is reviewed by USCIS. At the same time, the applicant may need to attend an interview with an Immigration Officer, and have their fingerprints and photograph taken. If the application is approved and all the requirements are met, the person will be granted their permanent residence card. Finally, after the application is approved, the applicant must attend a swearing-in ceremony and take the Oath of Allegiance. This ceremony recognizes the applicant as a permanent resident of the United States. After the swearing-in ceremony, the individual will receive their permanent residence card. Follow these steps and you will be on your way to becoming a permanent resident of Washington.
