How can I become a US citizen?
In order to become a US citizen, you must go through the process of naturalization. Naturalization is the process in which immigrants from outside the United States can become citizens. In order to be eligible for naturalization, you must meet the following basic requirements: 1. You must be a lawful permanent resident (have a green card) for at least five years. 2. You must have resided in the state of California for at least three months prior to filing your application. 3. You must have resided in the US continuously for at least five years prior to filing your application. 4. You must be at least 18 years old at the time of filing your application. 5. You must demonstrate "good moral character" and show that you are attached to the US and its principles of freedom and democracy. 6. You must display basic English language skills. 7. You must pass a civics and history test. For those individuals who are married to a United States citizen, or who are members of the armed forces or children of US citizens, there may be alternate forms of gaining US citizenship. The process of naturalization can take several months to complete, depending on your particular situation. When your application is approved, you will receive a Notice to take the Oath of Allegiance. After taking the oath, you can officially begin living your life as a US citizen.
