What are the restrictions on obtaining US citizenship?

In order to obtain US citizenship in Illinois, applicants must meet certain restrictions. Most notably, applicants must be at least 18 years old, be a lawful permanent resident for a minimum of five years, be physically present in the United States for at least 30 months within the past five years, and show good moral character. Additionally, all applicants must pass a civics and English language naturalization test. Applicants may also be disqualified from citizenship if they are found to have committed certain violent crimes, committed fraud or lied on their applications, or if they refuse to answer questions from immigration officers. Other restrictions may include being deported previously, having an affiliation with certain groups, or owing a large amount of taxes. Finally, applicants must be able to demonstrate that they are able to support themselves financially and are willing to accept the principles of the US Constitution. Those who are reluctant to do so or who cannot prove that they are able to provide for themselves may not meet the requirements for being granted US citizenship.
