How long does it take to become a US citizen through Naturalization?
Becoming a United States citizen through naturalization typically takes several months to several years. The process begins with filing the required paperwork and meeting certain requirements. In the state of Texas, you must have been a permanent legal resident for at least five years. During that time, you must also have lived in the state for at least three months. You must be of good moral character, have a basic understanding of English as well as the U.S. government and history, and be willing to swear allegiance to the United States. Additionally, you must pass a background check and appear for an interview at a local United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) field office. Once all requirements have been met and the paperwork is submitted, it usually takes about 6 months for the application to be processed. During this time, you may receive a notice to appear for a biometrics appointment, which will take an additional week or two. After the application is approved, you will be scheduled for a naturalization ceremony. On the day of the ceremony, you will take an Oath of Allegiance and receive your naturalization certificate. This step usually takes place three to six weeks after the application is submitted. After receiving your certificate, you will officially be a US citizen. The time it takes to become a US citizen through naturalization varies. However, it generally takes 3 to 6 months for the entire process to be completed.
