How can I apply for a refugee visa?

In Virginia, refugees can apply for a visa to the United States if they meet certain criteria. The first requirement is that the individual is located outside of the United States and is not a citizen of the U.S. or any country in the world. The individual must demonstrate a “well-founded fear of persecution based on race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion” in their home country. Furthermore, the individual must be of “special humanitarian concern to the United States.” Once the individual has met those requirements, they can begin the application process. The first step is to make contact with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees or U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. These organizations can provide more details about the process as well as any forms needed. Once the forms are completed, an interview with an immigration official will be scheduled. During this interview, the individual will be asked questions about their background and why they are seeking refugee status. The immigrant will also need to provide evidence of their eligibility. When all the forms have been completed and the interview is finished, the USCIS will review the application and make a decision. If approved, the individual will receive a visa that is good for up to five years and allows them to live and work in the U.S. A refugee visa is an important first step to becoming fully established in the United States.
